Native to South Africa and Namibia, the stemless rosettes of Aloe gariepensis feature narrow leaves with an upward-curving growth habit, accented by reddish teeth along the leaf margins. While the leaves are often pale green in color, they will flush to a rusty red when appropriately sun-stressed, giving the entire plant a uniquely coppery appearance. Reaching up to 3 feet tall and wide at maturity, this mid-sized Aloe will look equally at home as a container specimen or as an accent in temperate landscape plantings.

Plenty of bright light is necessary to encourage the best coloration from A. ‘Gariep Aloe,’ though it prefers protection from the hottest afternoon sun when planted outdoors. Adapted to arid growing conditions in its native habitat along the Gariep River, overwatering is the biggest threat to this variety. To avoid this fate, be sure to utilize a porous soil mixture in a well-draining pot, and water sparingly – a thorough soaking only once the soil has had a chance to completely dry through should be more than adequate. Even more infrequent watering during the winter months will protect the plant against rot, as cool and damp soil is particularly likely to predispose to this issue – and be sure to protect the thick leaves from frigid temperatures below Zone 9!

All plants are shipped bare-root with the exception of House Plants and Plant Club Subscription Boxes. House plants and succulents will ship from separate locations and may arrive at different times. Orders ship Monday-Friday each week. Please allow 1-3 business days for your order to be processed. We ship within the USA and its outlying territories ONLY. Read our full policy here.

Plant sizing is based on the diameter of the nursery pot (2", 2.5", 3", 4" etc), not the plant itself. Plants may be slightly larger or smaller than the pot they are grow in depending on availability or time of year. While we do our best to ship plants as similar to those pictured as possible, please keep in mind that all plants are unique from one to the next, and display color, shape, and growth variation based on current environment, time of year, and other contributing factors. Please note that we ship our plants as dry as possible in the fall and winter months to prevent root rot or freezing. They will plump back up after planting!
