Scarlet ball, a slow-growing, broad cactus will begin its life as a slightly flattened, round stem replete with tiny white areoles and short, white spines. As the plant matures, it can reach up to 15 inches high and nearly twice as wide – and earns its name from the, bright red blooms that will emerge at the apex of the stem during the summer months!

Unlike many other cacti, it prefers to be shielded from the hottest afternoon sun, favoring bright morning light with partial shade later in the day. This preference makes this variety especially well suited to thriving in our homes, where the lighting is inherently dimmer – great news for cactus lovers who may not have south or west-facing windows in their houses! Beyond this, its needs are fairly typical for a succulent, with thorough yet infrequent watering being key. A porous soil mix within a well-draining pot, along with ample airflow around the stem and soil surface, will round out its care routine.

Not particularly cold hardy, it prefers temperatures above 50 degrees, making it best suited to life as a houseplant in all but the warmest of climates.

If you're not completely happy with your Leaf & Clay purchase, we'll do everything we can to make things right!

All plants are shipped bare-root with the exception of House Plants and Plant Club Subscription Boxes. House plants and succulents will ship from separate locations and may arrive at different times. Orders ship Monday-Friday each week. Please allow 1-3 business days for your order to be processed. We ship within the USA and its outlying territories ONLY. Read our full policy here.

Plant sizing is based on the diameter of the nursery pot (2", 2.5", 3", 4" etc), not the plant itself. Plants may be slightly larger or smaller than the pot they are grow in depending on availability or time of year. While we do our best to ship plants as similar to those pictured as possible, please keep in mind that all plants are unique from one to the next, and display color, shape, and growth variation based on current environment, time of year, and other contributing factors. Please note that we ship our plants as dry as possible in the fall and winter months to prevent root rot or freezing. They will plump back up after planting!
