Myrtillocactus geometrizans - Blue Candle
DESCRIPTION
Native to Mexico and Central America, this columnar cactus earns its name from both its shape and its coloration – as the plant matures, it will send out candelabra-like branches all in its signature, dusty blue hue. Reaching over 15 feet tall in the wild, blue candle often remains much smaller within the home environment, where factors such as light levels and pot size serve to limits its growth.
Bright light is key to its success, as is a thorough yet infrequent watering routine. To avoid issues with rot or pests, be sure to utilize a porous soil mixture within a well-draining pot, and to ensure ample airflow around the stems and soil surface. During the summer blooming season, a dilute cactus fertilizer applied no more than once a month can encourage ample growth and flowers – and during the winter months, temperatures in the range of 55-65 degree can have the same effect, giving the plant the rest period it needs to prepare for bountiful blooms and the small, blueberry-like fruits that can follow them!
Hardy only to Zone 9, take care never to allow blue candle to be exposed to a hard frost, which could scar or even kill this stunning plant.
PLANT SIZING & APPEARANCE
Plant sizing is based on the diameter of the nursery pot (2", 2.5", 3", 4" etc), not the plant itself. Plants may be slightly larger or smaller than the pot they are grow in depending on availability or time of year. While we do our best to ship plants as similar to those pictured as possible, please keep in mind that all plants are unique from one to the next, and display color, shape, and growth variation based on current environment, time of year, and other contributing factors. Please note that we ship our plants as dry as possible in the fall and winter months to prevent root rot or freezing. They will plump back up after planting!
